Back-to-School Marketing Strategies for Game & Hobby Retailers

The August 2026 Marketing Calendar gives game and hobby business owners practical back-to-school marketing ideas, promotional events, and social media hooks for the dog days of summer. Use these ideas to increase foot traffic, community engagement, social media reach, and prepare your store for Q4.

August 2026 Marketing Calendar by Date

1st

  • Gen Con Weekend (July 30 – August 2)
      • Even if you’re not in Indianapolis, Gen Con drives the tabletop conversation this weekend. Follow the publisher announcements and share the ones relevant to your store. Consider a “Gen Con at Home” weekend! Demo the games getting buzz, take preorders for the hot releases, and remind customers you’re their local source for everything they saw online. Reach out to publishers to see if they offer any sort of marketing or early buy in program for games released at Gen Con.
  • DOGust 1st
      • The universal birthday for shelter dogs without paperwork. Many shelters use the “Dog Days of Summer” or “DOGust” to run campaigns to find homes for loving dogs. Contact your local shelter to see if you can cross-promote their efforts. Consider running an event where the entry fee is dog food or treats donated to a shelter. Don’t forget the cat treats too.
  • Spider-Man Day
      • Introduced by Stan Lee on August 1st, 1962, Spider-Man is a household name no matter who the current actor is. Run a special on anything Spider-Man and cross-promote with Marvel merchandise. Share on social media so your community can like and share as well.
  • National Planner Day
      • Normally about the love of planners, but it’s also a good moment to look ahead. As Q4 approaches, review your sales, discount, promotion, flyer, and holiday campaign plans. October 1 is about two months away; use a date calculator to map campaign and ordering deadlines.
  • National Disc Golf Day (first Saturday)
      • Disc golf continues to grow, and some game and hobby stores carry complete product lines. If you do, host a tournament, learn-to-play session, or introductory event. Pair it with starter-product promotions, and share the PDGA guide for parents and kids with newcomers.
  • Happy Birthday Jason Momoa!
    • American actor best known for Aquaman and Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones.

2nd

  • Gen Con Final Day
      • Last day of the show. This is a great day to post your “everything you saw at Gen Con, order it here” message and remind about preorders or save on shipping to buy locally.
  • National Coloring Book Day
      • Coloring books can support a broader product mix for game and hobby stores. Showcase your selection or host an in-store coloring event using free coloring pages from Crayola.
  • National Friendship Day & National Sisters Day (first Sunday)
    • A day dedicated to friendship, originally created by Hallmark in the 1930s to sell greeting cards, we can build a marketing day out of it. Promote two or four player board games as an in-store event, run a Two-Headed Giant Magic casual event, or pair up siblings and friends in team or co-op games. Connect with publishers that have great two-player games.

3rd

  • Clean Your Floors Day
    • Deep cleaning your store matters, especially if you’re working toward WPN Premium. Give staff a checklist for overlooked areas such as the tops of bookshelves, underneath display units, and dust-prone feature pieces like WizKids’ life-size Mimic.

4th

  • National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
    • Celebrate by eating cookies! If you sell cookies, feature and sample your chocolate chip cookie today. If you don’t, work with a local bakery to cross-promote or give away to customers. Just don’t forget to remind about allergies as needed.

5th

  • Blogger Day
    • Originally commemorating the early days of online publishing and Blogger.com, this is a useful reminder to review your current blog or resource library. Update outdated posts, align them with your long-term goals, and consider starting a blog if content marketing is missing from your plan.

6th

  • Sailor Moon Day
    • If you carry anime merchandise, manga, or related card games, today is your day to feature them. Anime fans are a loyal and growing segment for businesses.

7th

  • International Beer Day (first Friday)
    • If your store is licensed to serve alcohol or is near a taproom, consider hosting a “beer and board games” adult night and cross-promoting with a local brewery. Before promoting the event, confirm all local licensing, age-verification, and alcohol-service requirements, and consult qualified legal counsel when needed.

8th

  • International Cat Day
      • The internet loves cats. Feature cat-themed games such as Like Herding Cats from Professor Puzzle, and invite customers to share photos of their cats “helping” with game night. It is easy, high-engagement social media content.
  • National Dollar Day
      • On this day in 1786, the United States monetary system was created. For marketing, today is a great day to focus on clearance. Set some items to $1 and clear room for your Q4 inventory.
  • Garage Sale Day (second Saturday)
    • Host a community game garage sale or flea market: customers bring used games to sell or trade, you take a table fee or store credit percentage. Great traffic driver during a slow retail month.

9th

  • National Book Lovers Day
      • A national day dedicated to books. Focus on the books you carry in store: role-playing books, Warhammer’s Black Library, comics, graphic novels, etc. If you have a mini free library in or near your business, it’s also a great time to remind your customers that it exists.
  • National Bowling Day
    • A fun cross-promotion opportunity if you have a local bowling alley — swap coupons or run a joint family night.

10th

  • National Lazy Day
      • Lean into it: promote solo games, puzzles, and “low effort, high fun” games for a lazy summer Sunday-style post. If you carry self care items such as candles or soaps, today is a great time to promote or offer a discount today.
  • National S’mores Day
    • Build a “last campout of summer” display with camping-friendly card games and travel games. Consider pairing it with a S’more Night Light from Mushi.

11th

  • Happy Birthday Chris Hemsworth
      • Australian actor best known for Thor in the Marvel movies. Feature Marvel merchandise and games.
  • Update Your Bio Day
    • Whenever you do it, this is your recurring reminder: keep your online hours and information current on Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook, Yelp, Tripadvisor, and your own website. Customers need to know how to contact you and shop!

12th

  • Vinyl Record Day
      • If you’re a hobby store with crossover collectors, feature any music-adjacent games or partner with a local record shop for mutual promotion.
  • Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Peak (Aug 12–13)
    • The best meteor shower of the year peaks tonight. Feature space and astronomy themed games, telescopes if you carry them, or just post a viewing guide, great community content that isn’t widely promoted in the game and hobby space.

13th

  • International Left Handers Day
    • Take a moment to celebrate your left handed friends. Approximately 10% of the population is left-handed! Fun angle: dice rolls with your left hand only for a small discount or free small gift give away, like stickers or branded dice.

15th

  • National Back to School Prep Day
      • Big box stores have no doubt already started their back to school advertising. Consider an “it pays to get grades” club, A’s and B’s on a report card earn a gift card, event entry, or low cost product. Or hold a charity event where entry is school supplies that get donated directly to a local school or organization.
  • National Relaxation Day
    • Counter-programming to back-to-school stress: promote puzzles, solo games, and chill co-op games for parents who survived the school supply run and again, don’t forget soaps and candles if you carry those.

16th

  • National Tell a Joke Day
    • Take to social media and get some engagement. Have some business friendly jokes ready for your staff to use with customers. Bonus sales if you carry joke or trick toys.

17th

  • Black Cat Appreciation Day
      • Another cat day, another engagement post. Bonus: an early nod toward Halloween which is 75 days out. Is your Q4/Halloween plan started? Halloween is one of the most popular holidays, any chance to advertise or talk about it is likely a free social media content win.
  • National Nonprofit Day
    • Spotlight a local nonprofit you support, or announce a charity game night with proceeds or donations going to them.

18th

  • Mail Order Catalog Day
    • The original e-commerce. Fun angle for a “throwback” post or a genuinely good reminder to review your own online store and make sure your top sellers are listed and current.

19th

  • World Photography Day
      • Run a photo contest: best painted miniature, best game night setup, best shelfie. User-generated content is free marketing, pick winners and award store credit or an award!
  • National Aviation Day

20th

  • National Radio Day
    • Local radio still works for local retail. Consider reaching out to your local station about advertising or an event mentioned, many have community calendars that are free.

21st

  • National Senior Citizens Day
    • Seniors are an underrated gaming audience. Consider a daytime senior game session. I’d stick to classic games. You could possibly partner with a local senior center. Daytime traffic during a quiet retail hour. Could also help with gift ideas for their children and grandchildren.

24th

  • Pluto Demoted Day
    • On this day in 2006, Pluto lost its planet status. A perfect nerd-humor post, and a hook for space-themed games.

25th

  • Kiss and Make Up Day
    • Fun angle for your gamers, “Bury the hatchet from that one game of Monopoly / Diplomacy / Catan.” “Bring the friend you flipped the table on and forgive / play again” event.

26th

  • Women’s Equality Day
    • On this day the 19th Amendment was signed into law giving women the right to vote in the United States. Celebrate the achievements and success of women, especially those in your community or employment.

27th

  • National Just Because Day
    • A no-reason-needed flash sale or surprise giveaway. “Just because” is the entire marketing copy, easy.

28th

  • Bow Tie Day
    • “Bow ties are cool.” – Doctor Who, Matt Smith. A free marketable day, especially if you have a Doctor Who fan base. Have staff wear bow ties, show off Doctor Who merchandise, or host a look-alike contest for the best Eleventh Doctor.

29th

  • According to Hoyle Day
    • Edmond Hoyle literally wrote the book on game rules “according to Hoyle” means playing by the book. This day was made for game stores. Feature classic card games, host a rules-lawyer-friendly tournament, or run a “house rules vs. Hoyle” social post asking customers for their favorite house rules.

30th

  • National Beach Day
      • Last summer weekend energy. Travel games, waterproof playing cards, and vacation-friendly bundles. It’s also a good chance to start to clearance out any summer merchandise that won’t be needed over the winter season.
  • Frankenstein Day
    • Mary Shelley’s birthday. Another early Halloween teaser, horror board games and spooky RPGs start creeping toward the front of the store and become “alive”

31st

  • End of Month Check-In
    • August is in the books and Q4 is 30 days away. Labor Day is September 7th, 2026, and College Colors Day lands September 4th this year (Friday before Labor Day), so if you’re near a college, plan that now. Final check: holiday inventory ordered? Event calendar for September posted? Back-to-school hours updated everywhere online? Check and check? Great!
